Gawthorpe Hall by Shona

Gawthope Hall

I loved going to Gawthope Hall, because it brought out a lot of history throughout the building!
I enjoyed going through the different rooms, because every room gave me a different feeling and emotion. For example; going into the dining room, made me feel scared and ghost like. I liked the mysteriousness of the building, and how everything in it had old sentimental value. However, i didn't like going into some of the rooms, because it made me feel quite anxious and scared (like something was going to jump out at me).
I would recommend people who love history, to visit Gawthope Hall and get the experience that I did!

Saturday session 6 - Angie Lewin inspired collages

Today was the last session of the year :( but, we had a fantastically creative time making collages with Helen who brought in a selection of Angie Lewin's work for the group to look at. The girls drew simple line drawings of plants brought in by Helen and copied them onto tracing paper.
Using an array of coloured and patterned paper, the girls made gorgeous  collages, embellished with illustration that look absolutely gorgeous. This was such an amazing process to watch and had lots of different stages which enabled the girls to learn a variety of skills.
Helen and I will be back at the Crib on Wednesday morning to hang and display all the group's wonderful art work in time for the exhibition at 3pm.

Saturday session 5 - Posters

We had a great activity packed busy session today. Talya led a poster design activity and the girls worked in two separate groups to each create a huge Undercurrents poster covered in their fantastic nature inspired characters and hand-drawn lettering. Talya showed us various mark marking techniques using ink and oil pastels and it was brilliant experimenting and making a creative mess!

We also printed out lots of images for the Arts Award portfolios and the group spent some time making their portfolios look amazing.

It's amazing how much work we've produced over the last few weeks. We have one more session left with helen next week before we start puzzling out how to display all the group's work ready for the exhibition on the 30th.
Exciting stuff.

I also took some pictures of the girls and printed them on acetate so we could layer them over the top of some of their drawings but you'll have to wait for the exhibition to see these...

Creating a river

Last week Molly, Mhairi and Jessica came along to another URES event that was happening in the town centre.  Mid Pennine Arts had put on a photography exhibition of local people's photography, and viewers could vote for the peoples choice winner.  Quite a few of us really liked the one with the carcass of a very rusty shopping trolley buried in the mud.  It looked like an ancient artifact.

There was also a giant river painting being created by Urban Canvas next to the bandstand on St James St and we all got some chalk and got stuck in making patterns and waves in watery colours.  Everyones hands got a bit chalky!  Then it was off to the library for another session with Talya drawing riverside characters... more of that to follow.

Saturday Session 3 - paper sculpture with Helen!

Another great afternoon session yesterday at The Crib.
We were joined by artist Helen Roberts, a very multi-talented lady who came to show us some paper sculpting techniques.
We drew some lovely watery swirly shapes freehand and then cut them out and scored them to make them 3 dimensional. Working as a team we created a beautiful wave inspired fan....

Saturday session 2 - A river walk

Another beautiful day where we were blessed with dry weather and high spirits!
Project manager Rachel, artist Talya and I led a walk with our new recruits along the River Brun and through into Thompson Park.
We took photos and collected plant specimens so we could draw them later.
We also used Nature Print Paper to capture some lovely ghostly silhouettes. We also met a couple of very excitable dogs who made off with Molly's jelly babies which was hilarious.
As we walked, we talked through ideas of what we could do with our plant drawing. The girls came up with the idea of making little woodland characters out of their plants..

After the walk and a much needed lunch break, we were joined by Danielle and Shannon.
Talya got us all doing some detailed drawings of the plants we had collected and adding a sprinkle of magic to bring them to life...
